A Scottish tourist has died after falling seven floors from a hotel window in Turkey.

Anthony McDowall, known as Tony, was on holiday in Istanbul when the incident took place on Wednesday.

Turkish media reported that the 28-year-old Glaswegian was in the city with two friends, including an ex-girlfriend from America.

Mr McDowall fell after apparently trying to climb between two windows.

His family have been made aware and are being supported by government officials.

A spokesman for the Foreign Office said: “We are supporting the family of a British man following his death in Turkey and are in touch with the local authorities.”

Tony’s former football club, Rutherglen-based Southside United paid tribute on social media.

A statement posted on Facebook read: “We are devastated to hear the news of the passing of Tony McDowall whilst on holiday.

“Tony played a huge role when we gained promotion to the Premier Division.

“He was a great player and more importantly a great guy. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. RIP Tony.”
