A Scottish man has undergone life-saving surgery in hospital after being involved in a scooter crash in Bali.

The family of Euan Kay said he was left with two bleeds in the brain and life-changing facial injuries following the crash.

The 26-year-old was en route home to Glasgow after spending a year in Australia and was in Bali on holiday when the crash took place.

The family said more than £20,000 was needed to perform surgery, which he underwent during the night.

He has now been transferred to an intensive care unit, and the family say the operation has managed to stop the bleeding in his brain.

The 26-year-old remains on a drip in the hospital with his mum now with him in Bali, the family said.

More than £40,000 has already been raised to support his family after the fundraiser was posted on Wednesday.

An updated post on the GoFundMe reads: “We honestly can’t thank everyone enough. We are completely overwhelmed. We have been in tears with everyone’s kindness, generosity and support.

“Euan got out of surgery just before 1am after eight hours of surgery.

“He was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit and at 4:30am I got a call from the neurosurgeon who is happy with the operation. He has managed to stabilise things and stop the bleeds.

“Euan remains on drips/treatment to reduce pressure/swelling in the brain. He has reassured us that this should resolve itself now, it’s just monitoring and keeping a close eye now.

“We are still waiting on the ortho surgeon getting in touch to let us know how all the fixing of broken bones/reconstruction work went and exactly what they have done with plates/screws, etc., but the neurosurgeon has made me feel a little better, saying the operation went well.

“Keep Euan in your thoughts today while he starts his recovery in ICU.”

An FCDO Spokesperson said: “We have been in contact with a British man who has been hospitalised in Bali and are also in contact with local authorities.”
