Scots actor Peter Mullan was attacked after being a Good Samaritan by trying to stop a man from assaulting his partner.

Mullan stepped in between Dylan Bennet, 29, and the woman near the O2 Academy venue in Glasgow on September 20 last year.

Bennet had been spotted out in the street by security staff that morning, clutching a bottle of vodka.

CCTV later captured him sprinting towards his partner near the venue.

Glasgow Sheriff Court heard how Bennet was seen to seize his partner by the neck and violently shake her back and forward.

The Trainspotting and Braveheart actor was walking by the couple at the time and noticed the woman was upset and crying.

He asked a member of security staff at the O2 Academy if the woman was “okay” and was told the police had been called.

Mullan then turned towards Bennet and the woman to see him assaulting her. He then turned back and stepped between them.

The actor told the man that the police had been called before being headbutted.

The hearing was told the actor, also an award-winning director for films such as The Magdalene Sisters and Neds, was wounded on the head as a result of the attack.

Bennet also brandished a glass bottle at both Mullan and his partner during the incident.

Police later arrived and found Bennet to be being held on the ground by the O2 Academy security staff.

Tony Callaghan, defending, told the court that he had been at a party taking a cocktail of alcohol and drugs through the night.

The lawyer said: “He went to get more drink and returned to the party.

“An argument developed between himself and his partner but they don’t know what it was about.

“He deeply regrets his involvement in this incident, especially to the innocent bystander.”

Bennet pleaded guilty to the assaults on Mullan and the woman.

Sheriff Iain Fleming jailed Bennet for 18 months.
