A Scottish woman injured in a crash with a truck while riding a scooter in Bali faces losing her arm.
Charlene Morrissey was involved in a collision on Sunday, July 21, when she was knocked off her moped sustaining a serious arm injury.
The 33-year-old beautician from North Lanarkshire has undergone “multiple blood transfusions and life-saving surgeries” since the crash.
It is claimed that in the days following the accident, her family received medical bills of more than £50,000.
More than £100,000 has already been raised via a Go Fund Me page in a bid to cover the costs of medical procedures, including crucial pedicle flap surgery in the hope of saving her arm.
The family said it is liaising with the UK Foreign Office in the hope of flying her home for treatment after she underwent a skin graft in hospital.
Her sister, Alana Crofton said on Facebook on Tuesday, July 23: “Hi everyone, I thought it right to share an update regarding my sister Charlene who was involved in a terrible accident at the weekend. Main thing is she is stable.
“She had been riding her scooter when sadly she came off it at speed and collided with another vehicle. The injuries to my sister were extremely severe and at a later date she can share the extent of these injuries if she wishes.
“She has a long road ahead of her in terms of surgeries and recovery. Myself and my family are thankful to the medical team looking after her and to the team that got to her on time at the scene.
“As had it been a few minutes later this could be a much heavier burden to write out.
“We really appreciate the well wishes that have came through so far from friends and family it means a lot.
“Myself and my mum are now travelling to Bali to be with Charlene and help in anyway we can. We want to find out next steps and get Charlene home safe to her family where she can begin to recover.”
An update on Tuesday on the GoFundMe read: “To update you all, unfortunately, it looks like the plan to fly Charlene to Perth, Australia to continue her treatment there, is not going to be an option.
“We have explored all avenues, however, it’s seems there are too many restrictions in place and road blocks to consider and we are against the clock as her care is extremely time sensitive.
“To ensure there is no risk of infection and that the skin grafts that have been carried out so far show no sign of further necrotic skin, Charlene is yet to undergo various surgeries in Bali.
“Following her surgeries in Bali, the main aim now is to get Charlene stable enough for a medical escort back to the UK to continue treatment and carry out the pedicle flap surgery there.
“This will involve a team of highly trained medical professionals flying with Charlene.
“The journey back to the UK is going to be extremely difficult and comes with great risk, however, your help has gone a long way towards making this a potential option for her and for this we are eternally grateful.
“At this stage we are unable to confirm definitive next steps as mentioned, it is all very much dependant on the outcome of the next few surgeries and if the doctors are able to get Charlene in a condition where she’s is fit to fly.
“The process is taking longer than we had hoped as there are so many moving parts to consider.
“At times it feels like we are one step forward and two steps back but without the overwhelming support from every single kind person out there, this nightmare would have been so much worse.
“We are confident we will get there and get Charlene home safe.”
A spokesperson for the Foreign Office said: “We are supporting the family of a British national who has been hospitalised in Bali.”
