Scot arrested in France after £1.5m of drugs found in lorry

A 43-year-old man from Motherwell has been arrested in connection with a £1.5m cannabis recovery.

A man from North Lanarkshire has been arrested in France after a £1.5m haul of cannabis was found in a lorry at the Channel Tunnel.

The lorry driver, a 43-year-old from Motherwell, was detained at the UK-France border in Coquelles after around 150 kilos of the drug was found during a police search on Thursday morning.

He has since been released pending further investigation.

Border Force officers carrying out the search also seized £2000 in cash from the lorry.

Officers from the National Crime Agency and Police Scotland have searched properties in Motherwell, and nearby Bellshill and Shotts as part of their investigations.

NCA Scotland branch operations manager John McGowan said: “This is a significant drug seizure involving NCA teams in Scotland and England working together with partners including Border Force and Police Scotland.

“Together we are determined to do all we can to stem the supply of illicit drugs to Scotland, where they can do so much damage to our communities.”
