Schools in Dumfries and Galloway were locked down after a bull went on the loose.

Police Scotland contacted Penninghame Primary School and Douglas Ewart High School on Friday to advise that the animal had escaped in Newton Stewart.

Officers asked that pupils be kept inside the school buildings as a precaution.

The council said some secondary pupils were already away from the school as it happened during the lunch break.

Pupils were then called back to school, and police directed them along safe routes before the bull was then captured.

A council spokesperson said: “School staff immediately made announcements instructing pupils to return to the buildings, and Police officers supported this by directing pupils along safe routes back to school.

“The bull was subsequently captured, and pupils remained inside the buildings until the end of the school day as a precaution.”
