A 12-year-old from Glasgow has been nominated for an award after launching an “outstanding” campaign for a defibrillator to be installed in his school.
Riley Williamson, from Cambuslang, has been nominated at the upcoming Scottish First Aid Awards run by St Andrew’s First Aid.
After learning basic first aid and life support skills at Hallside Primary School, Riley approached his headteacher with the idea of installing a defibrillator in his school.
In primary seven, the youngster then started the ‘Heart of the Community’ appeal and rallied parents, pupils, and even the school choir to support his cause and raise funds.

He attended school events and engaged with his local community in an effort to spark conversations about first aid in homes and public spaces across the area.
By the end of his campaign, Riley had exceeded his initial fundraising target of £1,500, reaching over £2,000.
Using the funds, Hallside Primary purchased and installed a state-of-the-art defibrillator, a protective case, and a budget for future maintenance.
“I just wanted to do something that could really make a difference”, Riley said.
“Having a defibrillator close by can save someone’s life, and I’m so proud that my school understood the importance of this.”
The youngster continues visiting Hallside to check on the defibrillator and has already started planning to launch a similar appeal in his high school.
The St Andrew’s First Aid award ceremony, which commemorates exceptional first aid volunteers, will be held on Friday, March 28, 2025.
Stuart Callison, CEO of St Andrew’s First Aid, said: “Riley is an outstanding example of what one person can achieve when they are driven by compassion and determination.
“His efforts not only brought vital life-saving equipment to his school but also raised awareness across the community. Riley’s dedication is an inspiration.”
