A secondary school has paid tribute to a ‘caring’ former pupil who was allegedly stabbed to death on a North Ayrshire beach.
Kayden Moy died in hospital after being found seriously injured on Irvine beach following a report of a disturbance around 6.45pm on Saturday.
The 16-year-old received medical care at the scene but died in hospital on May 18. A 17-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with the incident.
Annette Alexander, headteacher at Duncanrig Secondary School in East Kilbride, said she was “deeply shocked” by the incident and described the ex-pupil as “full of character”.
She said: “We are deeply shocked and saddened by the sudden passing of our former pupil, Kayden Moy. Kayden was a kind and caring young man and full of character. He touched the lives of many within our school community.
“Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Kayden’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time. He will be greatly missed, but he will always be remembered with affection in our school.”
A spokesperson from South Lanarkshire Council added: “This has been a tragic event and our profound sympathies go out to Kayden’s loved ones.
“We are very much aware that it will have a wider impact on many people, including a number of our pupils. We will work with school staff to ensure that all appropriate supports are in place for anyone who needs them.
“We will of course also provide every possible assistance to Police Scotland as they carry out their investigations.”
Kayden’s dad, Paul Moy, took to social media to pay tribute to his “best friend” following the incident
He wrote: “My first born son, my big boy, my best friend, my main man, my everything. Rest easy, my boy.”
A fundraiser for Kayden’s family has been launched by Busby AFC, where Kayden played in the youth team for “several” years.
A spokesperson for the club said the community was “devastated” and “hit hard” by the news.
“Kayden’s grandfather is a long-term volunteer, player, coach, and friend of the Club. He currently spends his weeknights and weekends coaching Kayden’s younger brother, who currently plays in our junior section too,” the club said.
“We are aware that nothing will ever replace the life of an individual, but we hope that this fundraising will help Kayden’s family at this extremely difficult time.”
Over £4,000 had been donated as of Monday.
MSP for Central Scotland, Monica Lennon, extended her condolences to the teen’s family.
“It’s devastating that 16-year-old Kayden Moy went to the beach and never came home, robbed of his life and future,” she said.
“I extend my sincere condolences to Kayden’s heartbroken family and friends. This heartbreaking and violent tragedy will stun East Kilbride and Scotland. Enough is enough.”
