A primary school in South Lanarkshire has put safety measures in place after a pupil brought a knife onto campus.

Parents were contacted after a pupil was found to have brought a bladed item into school in their bag, without being noticed by any member of staff.

School management were made aware of the incident several days later.

Jacqueline Wallace, head of education for primary and early years at South Lanarkshire Council said appropriate safety measures had been put in place following the “isolated” incident.

She added: “We can confirm that there was an isolated incident in which it was learned than a pupil had taken a bladed item into school. The item was in a school bag and unseen by any member of staff, so school management only became aware several days after the incident occurred.

“The health and wellbeing of our pupils and staff is our top priority and the school and council take incidents of this nature, however rare, very seriously.

“In line with protocols therefore, risks have been assessed and appropriate safety measures have been put in place. These arrangements will continue to be reviewed and adjusted where necessary.”
