A lorry driver has been taken to hospital after a crash on a motorway which caused rush hour tailbacks.

At around 8.05am on Monday, police received a report of a crash involving a car and HGV on the M80 northbound at Old Inns, Cumbernauld.

At the time, traffic built up in the area causing delays of more than 30 minutes to motorists.

Police and the Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS) attended and the driver of the HGV was taken to University Hospital Monklands in Airdrie where his condition is currently unknown.

The carriageway was cleared before 10am.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 8.05am on Monday, May 15, police received a report of a crash involving a car and HGV on the M80 northbound at Old Inns, Cumbernauld.

“Police and SAS attended and the driver of the HGV has been taken to University Hospital Monklands in Airdrie.

“Enquiries are ongoing.”
