Ross Muir has unveiled a new painting inspired by a high school, with sales going towards pupils accessing more art materials.

The artist, from Alexandria, launched Prefect on Saturday as a tribute to Castlehead High School and the late Scottish artist John Byrne.

The piece celebrates Muir’s long-standing relationship with the school and aims to raise money for its art department, helping teachers provide materials for pupils.

He first visited the school several years ago to meet pupils and see their work, and has since returned regularly.

During his visits, he became increasingly aware of the challenges faced by teachers trying to provide art materials for large classes.

He promised art teacher, Gemma Scullion, he would do something to support the department.

The result is Prefect, a painting inspired by Byrne’s Self Portrait in Stetson from 1989, one of Muir’s favourite works at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.

All profits from print sales will be donated directly to the school, helping to provide extra art materials for pupils.

“The work Emma and the team are doing is nothing short of a miracle”, he said. “I’m constantly blown away by the kids, their passion and talent, and what they manage to achieve despite the challenges and restrictions they face.

“It’s just great to be involved with these guys. They’re so passionate and fearless, and it’s a real privilege to be part of it, seeing them grow and develop over the years I’ve been visiting.

“Art has been my saviour. Falling into painting changed my life. It keeps me busy and out of trouble to this day, and I really owe my life to it.

“It just feels great to be involved with the school and give back in any way I can.”

Emma Lang, Teacher of Art and Design at Castlehead High School, said art and creativity play an important role in the classroom.

She said: “We’re incredibly proud of their ambition and creativity. Having inspirational figures like Ross Muir and John Byrne connected to our school shows them what’s possible.

“Our S2 pupils even look forward to designing Ross Muir-inspired Christmas cards every year.”
