A retired doctor helped catch two men who robbed him by locking them in his flat.

Mun-Keat Phoong, 67, was targeted by convicted killer Daniel Adams and Martin Gould in Glasgow’s Bridgeton on March 6, 2020.

The pair told Dr Phoong that they were doing maintenance work before viciously attacking him with his own walking sticks.

The brave victim, who had recently suffered a stroke, led the attackers to his bedroom where he kept expensive whisky.

However, Dr Phoong made an escape before shutting them in and dialling 999.

The duo were trapped inside when police turned up to arrest them.

On Monday, a judge praised Dr Phoong as she jailed Adams and Gould at the High Court in Glasgow.

They admitted assaulting and robbing Dr Phoong to his severe injury.

Adams, 63, was sentenced to five years and six months while Gould, 44, received four years and six months.

Ex-boxer Adams was previously given a life sentence in 2000 for culpable homicide following the death of two men after he shoved them into the River Clyde.

Gould was previously a main witness in a high-profile trial involving the murder of Kurdish asylum seeker Firsat Dag in Glasgow in 2001.

He also has previous convictions for attempt murder and assault.

Gould is also a convicted attempted murderer after mugging a German tourist on the same night as the murder.

The court heard how, in this latest case, the attackers – wearing blue shirts and paint-stained hats – randomly chapped Dr Phoong’s door.

Prosecutor Chris Fyffe said: “The neighbours were having renovation work done and Dr Phoong opened the door thinking they were workmen.

“When the door was opened both men said they were carrying out maintenance work.

“Dr Phoong said he didn’t ask for work and asked them to leave but they barged through the threshold, pushed and grabbed him.”

The men forced a terrified Dr Phoong into the flat and attacked him with his two walking sticks.

Mr Fyffe said: “He was hit on the head and was bleeding from his wounds. Dr Phoong got to his feet but was pushed down.

“Believing they were trying to rob him, he told them he had expensive whisky and money in the bedroom.

“Both men went to the bedroom and put items into a rucksack. While they were there Dr Phoong exited the flat.

“He was in possession of the front door key which he locked behind him, securing both men inside.”

Dr Phoong was helped by a neighbour and a 999 call was made.

Officers then found the attackers still inside the bedroom and arrested them.

Adams stated: “The boy who lives here owes me £600 and a TV card.”

Dr Phoong was taken to hospital meantime and treated for cuts to his forehead and the top of his head.

John McElroy, defending Adams, told the court that he was drunk and has no recollection of the incident.

The lawyer said: “He wishes to apologise to the victim in this case.”

Euan Dow, defending Gould, stated he was also drunk and “he accepts there is genuine shame and remorse.”

Lady Haldane told the pair the attack would have been “utterly terrifying” for Dr Phoong.

She added: “He acted with great courage and a precise mind to escape from the flat and locking you in before further harm was caused.

“The pictures I have seen show the ferocity of this random attack.”
