Firefighters urged people living near a landfill to keep their windows and doors shut as they tackled a blaze at the site on Sunday night.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) sent four appliances to Greengairs Landfill Site on Meikle Drumgray Road near Airdrie, North Lanarkshire, when the alarm was raised at 6.51pm.
Emergency services said drivers passing through the area should keep their windows closed and turn off their air conditioning.
The fire service said: “Residents nearby and those who can smell smoke are advised to keep windows and doors shut.
“If travelling through smoke, motorists should keep windows and air vents closed and turn off air conditioning.”
Firefighters left the scene just after 8am on Monday.
There were no reports of any casualties, the SFRS added.
Wendy Thornton, SEPA’s national duty manager, said: “On Sunday at 8.30pm SEPA were notified of a fire at Greengairs Landfill Site, North Lanarkshire.
“SEPA Officers are in attendance, supporting a multi-agency response. We are engaging with the site operator and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and will continue to monitor the situation and respond as required.
“Residents in the surrounding area are advised to follow SFRS advice to keep all windows and doors closed.
“Members of the public can report potential pollution incidents at sepa.org.uk/report.”
