Local residents are being advised to “remain indoors” after broke out at a former primary school in North Lanarkshire.
The roof of the former Gartsherrie primary school in Coatbridge “collapsed” due to a blaze after 8.25pm on Sunday night with emergency services attending the scene.
Police said Gartsherrie Road was closed at Frederick Street and Blair Road due to the fire at the derelict building with residents urged to remain indoors with their windows and doors locked.
Fire crews remain on the scene.
Officers said there were no reports of injuries.
A Police Scotland statement said: “Gartsherrie Road in Coatbridge is closed at Frederick Street and Blair Road due to an ongoing fire at a derelict building.
“Emergency services are in attendance and there are no reports of any injuries.
“As a precaution, officers are advising local residents to remain indoors and keep their windows and doors closed as they deal with this incident.
“Officers were called to Gartsherrie Road around 8.25pm on Sunday, June 9.”
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 7.45pm on Sunday, June 9 to reports of a fire in a derelict building on Gartsherrie Road, Coatbridge, North Lanarkshire.
“Operations Control mobilised three appliances and a high reach appliance to the scene.
“There are no reported casualties at this time.
“Crews remain in attendance.”
Fulton MacGregor, SNP MSP for Coatbridge and Chryston said on Facebook: “As many will be aware the old Gartsherrie Primary School is on fire tonight and the roof has now totally collapsed.
“My thanks to the fire and rescue service and all other emergency services at the scene.
“I know how much this building means to those local to the area as well as wider Coatbridge.
“I’ll make some enquiries with the council and police tomorrow to try and ascertain what has happened and next steps.
“Sad night especially for those with memories of attending school there.”
Monica Lennon, Scottish Labour MSP for Central Scotland said: “This is devastating news, as the former Gartsherrie Primary School is a special place for so many in the local community.
“I am relieved that no-one was hurt in this terrible blaze, and I encourage nearby residents to continue to follow safety advice.
“The emergency services worked hard to get the incident under control as the fire ripped through the building.
“I join others in paying tribute to our police and fire services and hope that a full investigation will provide answers.”
