A sex attacker claimed to his victim that he had cancer during a five-year reign of terror.

Scott Coulter put the woman through a “horrific” ordeal, including raping her while he had been banned from going near her.

The crimes occurred at various addresses in Greenock and Port Glasgow, both in Inverclyde, between May 2019 and July 2024.

The violence saw the 39-year-old punch the woman, spit on her, grab her by the throat and shove her head underwater.

Coulter also threw broken glass at her, as well as part of a vacuum cleaner that he had smashed in a temper.

He accused the victim of having sex with other men.

Prosecutors further stated Coulter told the woman he had been diagnosed with a form of cancer and was apparently receiving treatment.

He flew into a rage when she challenged him about the claims, which saw him shout, scream, choke and drag the victim out of a flat.

Coulter assaulted the woman, refused to let her back inside and left her in the common close naked.

Coulter was said to have repeatedly carried out sex attacks on the victim while she was asleep and unconscious on various dates in 2024.

He was found guilty of rape and engaging in abusive behaviour following a trial at the High Court in Glasgow.

It emerged that Coulter had already been convicted of offences against the same woman, which had seen him hit with a seven-year non-harassment order in 2022 not to approach or contact her.

Lord Mulholland stated to him: “You have been convicted of horrific violence – do not shake your head at me.

“You put this poor woman through a hell of a life. You raped her as well, repeatedly.”

Coulter then seemed to make a comment as he stood in the dock.

Lord Mulholland replied back: “You want to argue with me? Well, don’t.

“You will be receiving a lengthy sentence of imprisonment. I can assure you of that – to protect women from you.

“You are a danger to women.”

Coulter was also put on the sex offenders list. The court was told the victim is looking for a further non-harassment order to be imposed.
