A man who raped a young woman at a hotel has been jailed for six years.

Zubair Syed was sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow for the violent attack, which included pushing and biting, in a room at the Turnberry Hotel in Ayrshire on June 23, 2023.

Syed had been convicted of the rape charge following a trial in Kilmarnock.

Sentencing, Judge William Gallacher told him: “The jury rejected your position and accepted the account given by the woman together with the other evidence.

“You were someone recently in this country, properly, and with the prospect of employment.

“This was a significant attack on a much younger person.

“She eloquently described the effect upon her and her protests – none of which you accepted and none of which you continue to accept.

“This incident persisted over a period of time and eventually resulted in injury.

“It also caused significant distress and ongoing impact.”

Syed, of Queen’s Park, Glasgow, was also put on the sex offenders list.

He was further made subject of a non-harassment order banning him from approaching or contacting the victim.
