A rail line has reopened five weeks after stormy weather caused a landslide.

The stretch of track between Kilmarnock and Dumfries was closed on February 10 after Storm Ciara caused the River Nirth to erode an embankment beneath the line.

Engineers found that 1700 tonnes of debris had slipped, taking out a retaining wall.

Network Rail said they had worked round the clock to repair the damage and reopen the line.

Tom Podger, project manager for the reinstatement work, said: “We have moved 6000 tonnes of rock into place to both rebuild the embankment and to form a protective barrier between the railway and the river and worked as quickly as possible to get the line re-opened for customers.

“It is great to get the job done and get the line re-opened and we are grateful to everyone for their patience during the work ”
