Proposal to create shuttle service from popular Glasgow venues to cut pollution

A proposal to create a shuttle service from popular venues in Glasgow has been made to the council after cars and buses were revealed to be the city’s biggest polluters.

During Tuesday’s net zero committee councillor Stephen Docherty asked officers if it would be possible to create a shuttle service from sites like the Hydro and Hampden to encourage people to use public transport rather than rely on their cars.

It comes after a report showed that people’s homes were the second biggest polluter followed by the commercial sector which had the third highest source of CO2 emissions in the city.

Glasgow City Council has been trying to tackle climate change through a number of measures including installing solar panels on public buildings, adding more cycle lanes and introducing the LEZ in a bid to meet its net zero targets by 2030.

During the committee questions were raised by Labour councillor Stephen Docherty over what measures were being taken to install shuttle services.

He said: “In relation to transport, and I realise this is a difficult one, maybe we could have shuttle buses from the Hydro, Hampden and for the Commonwealth Games 2026 to get more people to stop using their cars.

“If we could get electric buses and people onto the trains as much as possible, rather than driving, that would be a good idea and it would help reduce the carbon emissions.”

A council officer said that this report was a statement on emissions, and a revised climate plan would be brought before the committee in November, before it went out to consultation.

They said: “We have been working with our colleagues including transport to look at what the potential actions are moving forward but we will accelerate that transition and remove the lionshare that are in that transport sector.

“We are also working closely with things like the metro to try and help drive that forward. These are all perfectly valid points, councillor and I shall make sure those are considered.”
