An original prop axe from what is considered to be one of the greatest horror movies ever made is among the headline items set to go under the hammer in Glasgow next month.

The special effects axe created for Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece The Shining – complete with blood stains – is believed to be one of only three made and is expected to fetch between £50,000 and £100,000.

Other attractions include Bob Dylan’s stage-used guitar and rare Beatles archives in what auctioneers McTear’s are calling the largest entertainment memorabilia sale ever staged in Scotland.

The extraordinary collection of film, music, television and pop culture artefacts spans more than six decades of global entertainment history and the total auction could go for up to £500,000.

McTear’s film and pop culture specialist Sean Gillies told STV News: “I always see this kind of auction of pop culture as people’s childhood.

“It could be posters people had up in their room or maybe a prop they have seen in one of their favourite movies.

“And now they have the opportunity to come and bid on these magical items.”

The electro-acoustic guitar owned by Bob Dylan and played on stage during his 1984 UK and European tour with Carlos Santana is estimated to go for between £30,000 and £60,000.

A remarkable archive of Beatles reel-to-reel tapes and recording equipment linked to the band’s first historic visit to the United States in 1964, could fetch tens of thousands of pounds.

The auction will also feature one of the rarest Beatles vinyl groupings ever to come to market. The collection of three consecutively numbered early White Album pressings numbered 007, 008 and 009 has an estimate of £40,000 to £80,000.

Other artefacts up for sale include props from James Bond and Batman films, vintage pokemon cards, first edition comic books and Oasis memorabilia.

Gillies added: “We’ve got stuff in this auction at £30 to £50,000 so it’s for everyone.

“They can go onto McTear’s, bid and get this little memory so it changes variety wise.

“We have ticket stubs from concerts back in the 60s and 70s that maybe someone went to.

“From comics, posters, memorabilia, instruments – we’re covering everything.”

The auction will take place at McTear’s Auctioneers in Glasgow on June 3.
