A project to redevelop Argyle Street in Glasgow has been awarded a contract worth over £5.8m.
Argyle Street West Avenue, a redevelopment of the busy city centre street, aims to make the area more accessible for cyclists and pedestrians.
As part of the plans, Argyle Street will stretch from Anderston Cross to Trongate, and through St Enoch Square and Dixon Street down to the Clyde at Custom House Quay.
Glasgow City Council aim to make Argyle Street more green with infrastructure such as trees and raingardens, and to improve connectivity with better transport links.
The Avenues programme is described as ‘people-focused’ and aiming to ‘encourage active travel and make streets more attractive to residents, workers, visitors and investors.’
Backed by the Glasgow City Region City Deal (GCRCD) Rainton Construction (Scotland) Ltd has been awarded a contract worth £5.827m.
An open tender process allowed five final submissions to be considered before the deal was awarded.
Work as part of the £115m Avenues programme is expected to begin in summer of this year to be completed in the autumn of 2025.
Councillor Susan Aitken, leader of Glasgow City Council and chair of the Glasgow City Region Cabinet, said: “Our Avenues programme is focused on making our city centre streets more attractive and easier to get around – with this particular contract set to deliver work that will transform Argyle Street between the junction with Union Street and the Kingston Bridge.”
The GCRCD is funded by the Scottish and UK Governments and will see both governments each provide £500m of funding for infrastructure projects.
