Police watchdog to probe death of man in custody amid street incident

A probe will be launched into the incident, in which a 39-year-old man became unresponsive and was pronounced dead while in custody.

Police have referred themselves to a watchdog after a man died while in custody following an early morning incident in Glasgow.

Emergency services were called to Berkeley Street around 6.45am on Friday morning following reports of a disturbance at a property.

Two women aged 25 and 40 and a 27-year-old man were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

A 39-year-old man was also taken into police custody, before becoming unresponsive. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Scottish Ambulance Service.

Police said the death is being treated as unexplained and the man’s family have been informed.

Officers sealed off the street and a forensics tent could be seen on the road. Police remain at the scene on Saturday morning and enquiries are continuing.

Police say there is no threat to the wider community.

On Saturday, police confirmed they would be referring themselves to the regulator.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “The circumstances of the incident have been referred to the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC).”
