A police officer fired a taser twice at an asylum seeker who was later shot dead at a hotel.

Constable David Whyte used the stun gun on Badreddin Abdalla Adam Bosh, 28, at Glasgow city centre’s Park Inn on June 26, 2020.

Bosh had stabbed five people that day before he was shot six times by firearms officers.

Police had attempted to use non-lethal weapons to disarm Bosh during the incident before he was shot.

The Sudanese national was one of hundreds of refugees moved from flats to hotels at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

This was a move that raised concerns about the mental health of often vulnerable individuals.

Three asylum seekers, two hotel workers and PC Whyte – a first responder – were Mr Bosh’s victims during the attack.

The fifth day of the Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI) took place at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Monday.

Constable Cameron Wandrum, 43, who was one of the first attendees at the scene, gave evidence.

Prosecutor Alan Cameron KC told the officer: “PC Whyte said he fired the taser twice.

“The data from the taser was analysed.

“The conclusion was that the trigger was being activated four times.

“Both cartridges were deployed.

“Then cartridge two was activated another four times.

“Both cartridges concerned had one or more probes missing the target.”

The officer initially believed that the taser cartridge may have malfunctioned.

A report from a member of the College of policing said that it could neither confirm nor refute the claim.

However, due to the number of blasts recovered, the reporter stated that it “discharged normally.”

Mr Cameron asked PC Wandrum: “Your impression that the cartridge malfunctioned may be mistaken?”

The officer replied: “Yes.”

The inquiry earlier heard that PC Whyte was struck with the blade and suffered four wounds to his left thigh, abdomen, neck and eyebrow. His nose was also wounded as a result of the knife.

PC Whyte further sustained black eyes and cuts to his left cheek.

The inquiry continues before Sheriff Stuart Reid.
