Police officer assaulted as four arrests made during Old Firm game at Ibrox

A police officer was assaulted and four people have been arrested over incidents during Sunday’s Old Firm match at Ibrox.

The game, which had no Celtic fans inside the stadium, was won 3-0 by Rangers.

Police confirmed a 28-year-old man was arrested in connection with the assault of an officer.

A 55-year-old man was also arrested for sectarian abuse.

A 25-year-old man was arrested in connection with breach of the peace, and a 27-year-old man was arrested in connection with threatening and abusive behaviour and resisting arrest.

Chief Superintendent Stevie Dolan said: “A proportionate policing plan was in place for the Rangers v Celtic fixture at Ibrox Stadium on Sunday, September 13, 2026.”

“We worked closely with a range of partners, including both clubs, to maintain public safety and minimise any disruption.

“The match passed without major incident and I would like to thank the majority of fans for their conduct throughout the day.

“A small number of offences were detected during the course of the event. These included one instance of police assault and a separate incident involving sectarian abuse.

“Behaviour such as this is never acceptable and will not be tolerated. In both cases people have been arrested and will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal.”
