Police issue warning after 'fake officer' attempts to scam Rutherglen woman on phone

Police have issued a warning after a person claiming to be an officer attempted to scam a woman in South Lanarkshire.

The woman from Rutherglen received a call from the individual impersonating an officer who claimed that her bank card had been found.

The ‘officer’ then asked for the woman’s bank account details. She realised it was a scam and ended the call.

Inspector Ash Toner-Maxwell said: “I would urge everyone to be on their guard from any type of telephone call where someone asks for banking details.

“The criminals responsible can use very sophisticated tactics and go to great lengths to appear legitimate. It is important to remember that police officers or your bank will never ask you for bank details or to transfer money during an unsolicited call. You should end the call and call your bank or police on a number you have sourced and ideally with a different phone.

“Any victims of these crimes or anyone with concerns regarding calls they have received should contact their local police station through 101.“
