Police are investigating threatening communications involving a pupil made towards a school in Inverclyde.

Officers received a report of threatening communications at St Columba’s High School in Gourock on Thursday.

It is understood the incident is not related to a bomb threat after schools across the country were targeted with threatening messages last week.

Police received more than 300 calls related to the country-wide incident, and schools were evacuated amid the alleged hoax.

In a letter shared on social media, parents of pupils at St Columba’s were informed of a threat towards the school. Inverclyde Council confirmed the incident involved a pupil at the school.

The school and police confirmed that there is no risk to the wider public or the school community.

However, officers say they are following a positive line of enquiry regarding the threat.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “On Thursday, October 29, 2026, we received a report of threatening communications at a school in Inverclyde.

“Extensive enquiries are ongoing, and we are following a positive line of enquiry.

“Officers are continuing to liaise with partners; however, there is no risk to the wider public and school community.”

A spokesperson for Inverclyde Council said: “We are aware of an incident that was reported to Police Scotland involving a pupil at the school.

“Police Scotland has carried out enquiries and has confirmed that there is no threat to pupils, staff, or the wider school community.

“The safety and wellbeing of our pupils and staff is always our highest priority. The school has worked closely with Police Scotland throughout and appropriate support has been provided to those affected.

“We understand that incidents of this nature can cause concern. The school remains a safe environment for learning, and our established procedures for safeguarding and responding to concerns were followed throughout.

“As this matter relates to pupils and to protect confidentiality, it would not be appropriate to comment further.”
