The side of a showroom for new flats has been torn open by Storm Amy as residents fear “looting” – with at least one man seen leaving with an item.

The side of the Gorbals building was ripped off at the ground floor level around 5pm on Friday as strong winds battered Glasgow.

A man was spotted entering the exposed property on the corner of Commercial Road and Old Rutherglen Road and leaving with an item, prompting passers-by to suspect a robbery.

Debris also blew onto the road after the incident at the Cottonyards development, getting in the way of passing cars.

A resident said: “The storm left parts of the showroom and storage area ripped apart, with debris spilling onto the road and blocking traffic.

“On top of the disruption, some people took advantage of the chaos by looting goods from inside.”

Police turned up at about 9pm after being contacted over concerns about suspected theft.

It is understood a clean up has been taking place on Saturday.

Local councillor Soryia Siddique said: “I have raised the storm damage with the appropriate departments, and I am awaiting a response. Health and Safety must be a priority at all times. ”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 9.10pm on Friday, October 3, 2025, we received a report of an insecure property on Commercial Road in Glasgow.

“Officers attended and appropriate security advice was provided. Enquiries are ongoing.”
