A pensioner is fighting for her life after being hit by a car outside a shopping centre in North Ayrshire.

The 77-year-old woman was struck by the vehicle near Rivergate Shopping Centre in Irvine at around 6.30pm on Thursday.

She was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where she remains in a critical condition.

Sergeant Ian Thornton, of the Irvine road policing department, said: “The elderly woman who was involved in this crash has sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment in hospital.

"We are looking to speak to anyone who may have been in or around the Rivergate Shopping Centre at the time of the incident to come forward with any information.

“We are also appealing for anyone who may have dashcam footage that may help with our investigation, to get in contact with officers.

“Anyone with any information can contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 3029 of 19 December, 2019.”
