A passenger has died, and a driver has been airlifted to a hospital after a two-car crash in Dumfries and Galloway.

Emergency services were called to the crash on the A714 between Newton Stewart and Wigtown, near Upper Barr, at around 9.30am on Wednesday.

It involved a Volkswagen Golf and a Suzuki S-Cross.

A 65-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the Suzuki, died at the scene.

The male driver of the Suzuki, aged 72, was airlifted to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.

The 34-year-old female driver of the Golf was taken to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary.

The Scottish Ambulance Service sent two ambulances, an air ambulance and a paramedic response unit to the scene.

Sergeant Lindsey Tait said: “Our thoughts are with the family of the woman who has died at what is a very difficult time.

“Our enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances, and we are asking anyone who saw what happened to get in touch.

“If you were driving in the area at the time, please check any dash-cam footage you have, as any images captured could assist with our investigation.”

A Scottish Ambulance spokesperson said: “We received a call at 9.34am to attend a two-car road traffic collision on the A714 between Newton Stewart and Wigtown.

“We dispatched two ambulances, an air ambulance, and a paramedic response unit (PRU) to the scene.

“We transported one patient to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary.”
