Residents on a street in Paisley were woken in the early hours after a car was deliberately set alight.

Emergency services rushed to the scene on Fairway Avenue after receiving reports of a car on fire at around 12.40am on Wednesday morning.

The blaze was extinguished by crews but the charred car remains on the scene.

Local resident Chris Brown was woken by a number of “pops and bangs” before noticing the fire outside.

He told STV News: “The first I knew of it was pops and bangs.

“Police and fire crew were on scene really quick to put out the fire. The vehicle is still there but no crime tape or anything around it.”

Police Scotland has confirmed they are treating the fire as deliberate.

A spokesperson for the force said: “Around 12.40am on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, we were called to a report of a car on fire in Fairway Avenue, Paisley.

“The fire is being treated as wilful and enquiries are ongoing.”

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service has been contacted for comment.
