Homes in Paisley have been evacuated after officers responding to a car fire found a number of suspicious items in a nearby building.

A fire was reported on George Street around 8.15am with four fire engines and specialist resources sent to the scene.

The blaze was extinguished before a number of suspicious items were found in the common close of a building nearby.

Properties have been evacuated as a precaution and George Street has been closed between Causeyside Street and Barr Place.

A diversion has been put in place and people are asked to avoid the area while specialist resources are in attendance.

It’s understood that bomb disposal experts have not been called and no injuries have been reported.

A 41-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were alerted at 8.15am on Monday, September 2, to an incident on George Street, Paisley.

“Operations Control mobilised four appliances and specialist resources to the scene.

“Crews remain in attendance alongside emergency service partners.”
