Over £1m earmarked for projects to improve safety on Glasgow roads

Just over £1m is set to be invested in projects aimed at improving safety on Glasgow’s roads, including traffic signal upgrades.

Money from Transport Scotland’s road safety improvement fund (RSIF) is expected to be shared between a “priority list” of projects set out by roads officials.

They have been picked out following analysis of injury accidents, recorded vehicle speeds and heavily used crossings.

The council’s city administration committee will be asked to approve acceptance of the funding at a meeting on Thursday.

There are plans to spend £230,000 to upgrade traffic signals at the junction of Balmore Road and Ashgill Road. Tactile cones and paving will be installed.

At eight locations, £58,000 is set to be spent to upgrade crossings, including installing tactile cones, with the aim of improvising “active travel journeys and road safety”.

The work will be carried out at: Ashtree Road/Shawbridge Street; Pollokshaws Road/Maxwell Road/Eglinton Toll; Gallowgate/Sword Street; Dumbarton Road/Hawick Street; Pollokshaws Road/Titwood Road; Paisley Road West/Lourdes Avenue; Dalmarnock Road/Summerfield Street; Old Shettleston Road/McNair Street.

In a report, officials said the Scottish Government has committed to “a Safe System approach” to road safety, which is “based on the principle that our life and health should not be compromised by our need to travel”.

They added the RSIF aims to help councils meet road casualty reduction targets.

Other planned projects include traffic calming measures, such as pedestrian islands and speed cushions, at Shields Road, Arrochar Street and Rothes Drive

A footway extension and pedestrian island is planned on Langside Avenue at Camphill Avenue/Mansionhouse Road while speed cushions are set to be installed at Lochend Road.

The council report added: “This funding allocation will promote road safety projects focused on safer speeds and safer roads and roadside.”

Funding must be spent this financial year, officials added.
