Nursery worker failed to give children medicine and lied about it

A nursery worker in Airdrie failed to give two children medicine on five separate occasions despite saying he did.

David Meechan was employed as a nursery senior with Green Apple Nursery Ltd when the incidents occurred in 2024.

Following an investigation carried out by the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC), it was determined that Meechan failed to administer medication to two children on multiple occasions and then lied about doing so.

The decision found that Meechan recorded on the nursery’s FAMLY App that he had given a child medicine and told the parent he had administered it, despite knowing this was untrue.

The watchdog told the nursery worker that his actions were “dishonest” and of a “serious nature”. It said it was an attempt to “conceal the fact that [he] had not carried out [his] duties in the correct manner”.

“You failed to administer medication and thereafter informed the parents on five separate occasions that you had done so,” the SSSC told Meechan.

“You placed both [children] at risk of harm by not administering the medication.”

The watchdog found that Meechan’s ability to work in the care sector – his “fitness to practice” – was impaired, and he was struck off the care register.

The SSSC said Meechan is not currently working in the sector, but it took the decision to ban him from returning to “maintain the continuing trust and confidence in the social service profession and the SSSC as the regulator of the profession”.
