A family is preparing to cycle 45 miles in memory of their mother, who died from a brain tumour a decade ago.

In February 2014 Lesley McFarlane, who was known for her infectious sense of humour and bright smile, was diagnosed with an aggressive glioblastoma after experiencing severe headaches.

Despite undergoing surgery and treatment, the tumour progressed rapidly. Lesley passed away aged 45 whilst in the care of her family in January 2015.

Her two daughters, Mirren, 24, and Caitlin, 21, and their father, Kevin, 54, are now set to cycle from their home in Cumbernauld to Kirkcaldy, Fife, Lesley’s hometown on January 4, 2025.

The trio will be covering a mile for every year of the beloved mum’s life.

Caitlin said: “This ride is more than just a challenge – it’s a tribute to Mum’s strength, love, and legacy, and a way to make a meaningful difference for other families facing the same battle. It’s a chance to celebrate her life, share her story, and raise vital funds for a cause that means so much to our family.

“Mum would probably call us mad for cycling 45 miles in January, but we know she’d be bursting with pride. The ten-year milestone feels surreal, but knowing that our efforts could contribute to advancing research and finding a cure brings comfort to a day that’s always emotional.”

Even in her final months, Lesley made sure to create special moments for her girls.

“Mum’s love for us never wavered, even in the hardest moments,” said Mirren.

“She was determined to make every day count, creating memories to comfort us in the days when she no longer could. One of the highlights was our unforgettable trip to New York, which she always wanted to do and organised just three months before she passed. Her strength and devotion to us were nothing short of extraordinary.”

The family will be raising cash for Brain Tumour Research due to the organisation’s close connection with the Beatson Cancer Charity in Glasgow, where Lesley spent much of her final months.

Mirren added: “It’s inspiring to know that a research centre focused on finding a cure for the brain tumour that Mum had is opening so close to home.

“We’re deeply committed to supporting this cause to help prevent other families from going through the unfair experience of losing a loving mother too soon. We’re so grateful to everyone who has helped us exceed our fundraising goal, and we can’t wait to ride for Mum and make her proud.”
