North Lanarkshire Council has written off almost £500,000 in various debts which have been deemed unrecoverable.
The money is a small fraction of £116m issued in invoices for council services in the past year, including cleaning, waste collection, burials and property repairs.
The most common reasons for debt being written off include death of the debtor, liquidation, disappearance or the amount in question being too small for recovery methods to be viable, as well as all conventional means of recovery having been exhausted.
It was these two final categories which accounted for the largest percentage of the money in question.
The total amount written off is slightly lower than in 2023 but more than seen in 2021 and 2022.
The annual write-off was formally approved at a recent meeting of the council’s housing committee, and will now be referred to the housing committee.
