No Shankland or Chermiti – The attacking options available to injury-hit Rangers

Rangers are looking for goalscorers to step up after their latest injury blow.

They are set to be without captain Lawrence Shankland for an extended period after the striker suffered what manager Derek McInnes described as a “significant” hamstring injury on Saturday.

Shankland had scored his side’s previous three goals and his absence comes on top of the knee injury that could rule Youssef Chermiti out for the entire season.

The pair netted 31 times between them in the league last term, both sitting in the top four in the charts behind Motherwell’s Tawanda Maswanhise and Celtic midfielder Benjamin Nygren. Shankland scored 16 league goals for Hearts, while Chermiti was one goal behind for Rangers.

Here are the current strike options available to Derek McInnes in the absence of his two main marksmen.

Ryan Naderi

The German only took four minutes to make his mark as Lawrence Shankland’s replacement on Saturday.

Naderi dispossessed Motherwell goalkeeper Alex Paulsen before scoring an easy finish to net the only goal of the game. It was only the 23-year-old’s second Scottish Premiership goal since his move from Hansa Rostock six months ago.

Rangers pushed the boat out to sign the 6ft 4in striker in February rather than waiting until the summer, but he suffered an injury after his first league goal against Dundee United in April and only played a limited part in the title run-in.

McInnes praised Naderi’s pressing and physical presence after Saturday’s win and he now has three goals this season in all competitions.

Kevin Kelsy

The Venezuelan will be under pressure to hit the ground running after his move from Portland Timbers for a fee of £9.2m.

The 22-year-old missed a good chance against Motherwell but had reported feeling stiff after the travel and training either side of his transfer.

The former Shakhtar Donetsk forward delivered 16 goals and six assists in 53 appearances, 32 of them starts, for the MLS side.

Bojan Miovski

The former Aberdeen striker was not even on the bench on Saturday but could find himself with an unexpected chance after looking like he would be on his way out of Ibrox during the summer.

The 27-year-old’s career has stalled since he left Aberdeen for Girona in a multi-million pound deal in 2024.

The North Macedonia international scored 44 goals in two seasons for the Dons but only netted five times in 12 months in Spain. Miovski scored 13 goals for Rangers last season but most of his appearances were off the bench and he has only had 40 minutes of action this season.

He announced on Sunday night that he was dealing with his own future, writing on Instagram: “I would like to confirm that I am not represented by an football agent or agency.

“For the time being I will personally manage all matters relating to my professional career and future. Any enquiries regarding my professional career or future opportunities should be directed exclusively to me personally.”
