Nicky Campbell tells court he was beaten by teacher at private school

An examination of the facts is taking place at the High Court in Edinburgh

Broadcaster Nicky Campbell has told a court of being “yanked” from behind and beaten by a teacher at one of Scotland’s most prestigious private schools.

Campbell says the incident happened in the 1970s, and was committed by maths teacher Colin Turner.

Turner and a fellow teacher David Bourne have been deemed unfit to stand trial for a number of accusations of physical abuse. Instead, an examination of the facts is taking place at the High Court in Edinburgh.

Turner and Bourne were both teachers at Edinburgh Academy, one of Scotland’s top private schools.

Both are accused of being physically abusive to pupils in their care during the 70s and 80s but have been found medically unfit to stand trial.

There is no jury, neither man is present in court and they will not be found innocent or guilty.

Instead, the court will determine if it’s satisfied beyond a reasonable doubt that they committed the actions they’re accused of.

Broadcaster Nicky Campbell was one of the former pupils giving evidence on Wednesday.

He told the court about an occasion where he claims Turner yanked him from behind and proceeded to start hitting him.

Campbell described what he called a “frenzy” lasting 15 to 20 seconds where Turner slapped and hit him.

He says his mother called the school about the incident and later told him Turner had been “dealt with”.

Campbell’s evidence continues on Thursday.

Many former pupils of Edinburgh Academy have previously told the Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry of their experiences at the school.

Two men – John Brownlee and John Young – had their alleged offending established through similar proceedings.

The UK is currently truing to extradite another former teacher, Ian Wares, from South Africa.

The 87-year-old has previously been convicted of indecently assaulting a former pupil in South Africa.
