The NHS has apologised after health workers were left waiting hours for their coronavirus vaccines.

Staff were forced to queue outside Glasgow Royal Infirmary on Tuesday morning because vaccination workers had not arrived at the hospital.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said it was “sorry for this mistake” and promised that any missed appointments would be quickly rescheduled.

Health workers, care staff and over 80s are among the first people receiving protection from Covid-19 before the jab is rolled out to the wider population.

One nurse told The Herald newspaper that the queue included frontline workers who would otherwise have been on duty.

He said: “I was told by a steward that the people who are now at the back of the queue will have to wait for three hours. The wards are depleted because of this as well.”

The health board said a scheduling error meant vaccination staff were not at the hospital in time for the appointments.

It said: “We sincerely apologise to anyone who was unable to receive their Covid-19 vaccination at Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

“Unfortunately due to a scheduling error, vaccination staff were not on-site to provide vaccinations this morning. We are sorry for this mistake.

“We are making arrangements for those who have missed their appointment to be offered another appointment.”
