A new “super school” campus, swimming pool and library are to be built in North Ayrshire.
The school site in Ardrossan will incorporate a new Ardrossan Academy and Winton Primary – as well as facilities that could be used by the wider community.
Chief executive Craig Hatton agreed to close the two schools and relocate them to North Shore in the town earlier this month.
However, as a result of concerns being raised about the new site being contaminated, it will have to undergo SEPA-approved work.
There are hydrocarbons and heavy metals on the land as it was formerly home to a bitumen processing plant.
A council statement said the development of the site alongside Ayrshire Growth Deal investment “represents a significant opportunity for the positive regeneration of Ardrossan”.
