A man who joked about raping a teenager after sexually assaulting her at a party has been jailed for 28 months.
Muzammal Karim, 30, preyed on the 18-year-old at a property in Glasgow’s Bridgeton on October 7 2021.
Karim, of Newton Mearns, East Renfrewshire, later called the victim’s friend where he made a “joke” about raping her.
Karim was found guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court of sexually assaulting the teenager to her injury with intent to rape.
Sheriff Joan Kerr also put Karim on the sex offenders register for ten years.
The court heard that the pair did not know each other but had attended a party at the flat that night.
The victim then went to bed and jurors were told that she was woken by Karim touching her leg.
Prosecutor Darren Harty stated in his closing speech: “She speaks of Karim straddling her, crushing her, her being frozen, having a lump in her throat wanting to cry.”
Jurors were told that Karim immediately left that flat and he later called the teenager’s friend.
Mr Harty said: “The explanation for him making such call I submit was hideous in the extreme.
“He joked about raping the teenager to annoy her friend because she cursed at him and was jealous.
“I submit to you ladies and gentlemen that such a position is utterly preposterous.
“I suggest the reason he made that call was nothing more than to gloat at what he had just done.”
Karim’s DNA was later found on the victim’s underwear.
He told jurors in his evidence that he was “showing off” earlier that night and that he also mutually kissed the teenager.
Karim claimed that some of the allegations were done with consent.
Mr Harty said: “The evidence is that of an opportunistic crime by Karim who took advantage of a situation and a girl and circumstances to carry out the sexual acts without her consent knowing full well she was not consenting.
“The affects on her are plain to see.”
