Murder probe launched after man attacked and killed in street Police Scotland

A young man who died after being attacked on the street in North Ayrshire has been named by police as 23-year-old Sean McKay.

Officers have launched a murder investigation following the incident on St Margaret Avenue in Dalry at around 9.05pm on Sunday night.

Mr McKay’s relatives are aware and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

Detective inspector Stephen McCulloch said: “Our priority is to find the person responsible for this crime as soon as possible and we need the help of the community to do so.

“So far the support and response from locals has been helpful to our investigation, however, we still need people to come forward with any information they may have as it could prove crucial to the inquiry.

“Please contact officers via 101 quoting reference number 3404 of Sunday, October 10, 2021 or call Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.”

DI McCulloch said on Monday it appeared Mr McKay had been “attacked and killed for absolutely no reason other than being in the same place as the man at the same time”.

Police are also investigating a separate incident in the town involving a man being stabbed on nearby Peden Avenue.

DI McCulloch said: “With regard to this incident and the serious assault on Peden Avenue, Dalry, on Saturday night, as a result of extensive and ongoing enquiries in the local area, we are following positive lines of enquiry in relation to each incident.

“We can confirm that whilst the incidents are not directly linked, we are continuing investigations to establish the full circumstances.”
