Tributes were paid to the 15-year-old by Kingsway Community Connections – a community centre in Glasgow.

They said in a statement: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death of Amen Teklay.

“Amen was involved in our youth group and film group over the past year and was still receiving support from our staff until yesterday afternoon.

“He was funny, bright and enjoyed playing football, he loved pizza nights and taking part in a summer BBQ.

“Our memories of Amen are encapsulated in this film he made together with his friends where he talked about why attending the group was important to him.

“Amen developed great relationships with our team, and we are all devastated with his sudden death.

“We are providing support to Amen’s immediate family and our community as they come to terms with the loss of a son, friend and brother.

“We ask that you consider the thoughts and feelings of those grieving the loss of a young man who had his whole life still in front of him and respect the privacy of his family and friends at this deeply upsetting time.

“KCC would also like to extend our thoughts to the other support agencies who we know were supporting Amen before his death and give thanks to the emergency services who tried desperately to save his life.”

‘Amen was a friendly and much loved young man’

The 15-year-old attended St Thomas Aquinas Secondary in the city’s West End.

Headteacher Claire McInally has described Amen as a “bright” pupil with a passion for music and the media.

She said: “This is a tragic situation.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Amen’s family and friends at this devastating time.

“Amen was a friendly and much loved young man who was really interested in music and the media. He was bright and showed great promise.

“This has been a shock for our school community, and we are continuing to offer support to our young people, staff and those in the wider community who are affected.”

Murder investigation launched following post-mortem

On Thursday, police could not say if the boy had been attacked with a weapon, saying that would not be known until a post-mortem examination was carried out.

A large police presence remains in the area as officers continue to investigate.

Detective superintendent Cheryl Kelly said she believes “answers lie in the community” and that the murder was being treated as an isolated incident.

She described the victim as a “child”, and said his death was a “tragedy”.

When it was put to her that the boy’s teachers had told his classmates of the death, Ms Kelly said specialist officers are supporting his family.

Ms Kelly said: “Our thoughts are with the Amen’s family and friends at this distressing time. We will continue to provide specialist support for them as our investigation continues.

“We are still keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time and anyone who has dash cam, private CCTV or doorbell footage around the time of the incident.”

She said forensics officers are working at the scene, and added: “It will come out whether there are any weapons found which are relevant.”

Chief inspector Colin MacLucas, local area commander, said: “I understand that residents in the area will be very concerned following this incident however I can reassure them we are working very closely with our detective colleagues to establish the circumstances and I can assure them that there will continue to be a visible policing presence in the area.

“I would urge anyone with questions, concerns or information to approach officers who are there to help.

“Anyone with information can contact Police Scotland quoting incident number 3652 of March 5, or contacting Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

Detectives have also set up a portal that gives members of the public access to a form to send information directly to the Major Investigation Team, which can be submitted anonymously.
