A man is to stand trial charged with strangling and murdering his mother.

Craig Haley, 36, allegedly killed Mary Haley at a house in Hamilton, Lanarkshire on February 8, 2020.

Prosecutors claim the 75-year-old was punched and kicked as well as being hit with a “blunt implement” causing her to fall.

The charge further states Haley then dragged the pensioner along the floor and stairs.

It is said he grabbed her by the neck and restricted his mum’s breathing by “manual strangulation”.

Haley is separately accused of being threatening and abusive towards Mary between March 12, 2019, and the day of the alleged murder.

This includes claims he demanded money from the pensioner and caused her to flee from her home.

He is further charged with stealing a number of items from the house.

Haley – who denies the allegations – was in the dock for a hearing at the High Court in Glasgow on Friday.

Lord Burns set a trial due to take place in June. The case could last five days.
