Mitchell Library to undergo specialist cleaning after being covered in graffiti

Operator Glasgow Life has said they will have to pay a specialist to remove the graffiti

Glasgow’s Mitchell Library will have to undergo specialist cleaning after being vandalised.

The building – which dates back to 1911 – was tagged with graffiti close to its North Street entrance.

Black spray paint has been used in the incident, which is believed to have occurred between Thursday evening and Friday morning.

The writing appears to read the word ‘smerk’.

Glasgow Life, which operates services within the Mitchell Library, said the graffiti will need to be removed using specialist equipment.

A spokesperson said: “The graffiti on the exterior of The Mitchell Library will require specialist cleaning. We have requested cost estimates to allow us to appoint a contractor to carry out the work.”

Back in 2024, the historic building was given an exterior deep clean, which lasted several days.

Teams had to abseil down the side of the building in order to reach areas for jet washing.

Police Scotland has been contacted for comment.
