Men reported for England trip to ‘shop for best deals’ Cumbria Constabulary

Four men from Dumfries and Galloway have been reported for breaking the coronavirus restrictions to travel to England to shop for the “best deals”.

The men were stopped in a car on the M6 at Carlisle by officers from the Cumbria Constabulary.

A force spokesperson said: “One of the men said they had been to three different shops looking for the best deals.”

The men – three in their 20s and one in their 30s – all reside at different households, with three coming from Dumfries and one from Gretna.

Meanwhile, officers from the same force intercepted an Audi driver allegedly attempting to make an almost 600-mile roundtrip from Birmingham to Glasgow for a Dior bag.

The 24-year-old man was pulled over at Killington Lake Services on the M6 on Monday at around 11.15pm.

He has been accused of speeding at 100mph, driving whilst uninsured and breaching the Covid-19 legislation.

The vehicle was seized and those in the car were forced to take a taxi back to Birmingham.

Cumbria Constabulary’s assistant chief constable Andrew Slattery said: “This past weekend saw an increase in the number of people ignoring the public health restrictions, resulting in dozens of people receiving Fixed Penalty Notices.

“The North-West of England has been one of the hardest hit areas of the country and the restrictions are in place to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

“Getting in your car and travelling here will put further strain on health resources. It will also increase your own chance of contracting the virus – and passing it on to other people, including family members.”
