Memories will be made at the new-look Burrell Collection

Thoughts from a sneak preview of the revamped Burrell Collection.

Memories will be made at the new-look Burrell Collection in Glasgow STV News

The revamped Burrell Collection opens in Pollok County Park next week after six years of work costing £68m.

I have fond memories of visiting the Burrell Collection as a little girl, although, like many children, I imagine the idea of getting a souvenir rubber and a colouring book at the end of the visit was just as appealing.

I remember it being a treasure trove of things I hadn’t really seen anywhere else and being amazed at the idea that one man – William Burrell, who donated the collection to Glasgow – had all this in his home.

I still am.

So there was something exciting about being one of the first to see the revamped version of the museum for Scotland Tonight, and I really think the new digital touches will help it appeal to a much wider audience than before.

It’s a joy in Glasgow to have places like this on our doorstep, not only to learn from but, if I’m honest, as a mother, to also take children to on rainy days.

They can run around while soaking up a little culture, then we can shelter in the café at the end – and the Burrell has a great one.

It also has a very calming element to it and I would encourage anyone who wants to get some quiet time, or take time out to step through those doors and walk down the ‘walk in the woods’ corridor and enjoy a very special space.

It’s Burrell’s gift that thankfully keeps on giving.

Scotland Tonight is on STV and the STV Player at 8.30pm on Thursday, March 24.
