A man who threw a bottle of Yazoo containing flammable liquid into a flat has been jailed for 12 months.

Connor Paterson, 25, launched the missile as well as a rock through a window of the property in Glasgow’s Wellhouse on January 8, 2024.

Glasgow Sheriff Court was told that the homeowner left their property that day without incident.

A witness later noticed a man “acting suspiciously” outside the property.

The witness then heard a loud bang and looked out her window to see the same man running off.

The homeowner returned and saw that there was a smashed window in the living room.

Prosecutor Hazel Kerr said: “They saw a Yazoo bottle and a rock.”

The police were contacted and a description of the man was given to them.

Paterson’s DNA was later recovered from the thrown items and he was traced.

Paterson, of Airdrie, Lanarkshire, pled guilty to attempting to set fire to the property.

Gerry Devaney, defending, told the court: “The property was unoccupied when the incident occurred.

“The items thrown were through a window and it doesn’t appear that it caught alight in the property.

“It was an attempt to set fire to the property and perhaps as no fire occurred, there was a positive analysis of the two items and the DNA matched Mr Paterson.”

Sheriff Joan Kerr told Paterson when jailing him that it was a “serious matter” and custody was the only appropriate way of dealing with it.
