Man who struck ex-girlfriend with glass lantern jailed

A man who assaulted his ex-girlfriend with a glass lantern has been jailed for a minimum of 20 months.

David Newlands, 27, attacked nurse Jennifer Watson at her home in Glasgow’s Shawlands last December after suspecting she had been unfaithful to him.

Glasgow Sheriff Court heard how Newlands dragged 23-year-old Ms Watson from her bed and threatened her with a knife.

Prosecutor Mark Allan said: “He punched her on the head, grabbed her chest, restrained and pushed her against a wall.”

Ms Watson tried to flee but was struck with a glass lantern and punched before she managed to escape and ask a neighbour for help.

Ms Watson was treated for injuries to her head and body in hospital.

Sheriff Johanna Johnston QC told Newlands that he “abused the kindness” shown to him by Ms Watson.

She said: “You were welcomed into her home and you ruined that with a fit of jealous rage that you failed to control – all of that must have been terrifying for her “

Sheriff Johnston also granted a ten-year non-harassment order stopping Newlands from having any contact with Ms Watson.
