A man who raped a 14-year-old girl after giving her alcohol and drugs has been jailed for seven years.

Shaun Miller preyed on the victim after inviting the child and her friends back to his then-flat in Glasgow in December 2019.

He was sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow on Tuesday having been convicted of rape.

Miller had denied the charge claiming the youngster had “spontaneously initiated” sexual activity with him.

As well as the jail term, Judge Tony Kelly also ordered Miller to be supervised for a further two years on his release due to the risk he poses.

Miller, now 33, had followed proceedings via video-link from prison.

After he was sentenced, he could be seen on the court televisions standing up and raising the middle finger of both hands at the camera.

The girl had been out with friends in Glasgow’s Gorbals area that night.

Miller then agreed to buy them alcohol from a local Spar shop after they gave him money.

He asked them back to his home and went on to provide cocaine when they arrived.

The girl recalled Miller “pestering” her, and she was said to have felt “distinctly uncomfortable”.

He persuaded her to stay by claiming he would arrange for a taxi to later take her and a friend home.

The cab arrived, but it had to turn back after it emerged that Miller had not arranged payment for the fare.

She ended up back at Miller’s flat and eventually fell asleep, and awoke to Miller raping her.

Edith Forrest KC, defending, said Miller continued to have the support of relatives.

Sentencing, Judge Kelly said it was to the girl’s “misfortune” that she and a friend has to return to Miller’s home.

He stated: “I assess your culpability as significant. There was a considerable age gap between you and her. You were 28, she was 14.”

The court heard Miller was deemed at high risk of similar offending.

He was put on the sex offenders list as well as being banned from approaching or contacting the victim, both for an indefinite period.
