A serial abuser who put six women through horrific ordeals has been jailed for ten years.

Steven MacLean was sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow on Thursday, having earlier been convicted of 15 charges of a campaign of terror spanning between 2010 and 2024.

The 36-year-old had denied the catalogue of offences during a trial in Paisley last month.

MacLean, of Ayr, tormented his first victim which included the repeated rape and sexual assault of her.

He was physically violent towards her, and attacks saw McLean choke, hit and spit on the woman. He also held her against a wall and threw liquid on her.

Controlling MacLean would hound her with calls and texts as well as monitor her movements.

The next victim was threatened and had a pot hurled at her.

The third woman was abused by MacLean, who held the woman hostage by locking her in a flat.

The jury deemed this charge was racially aggravated.

MacLean demanded to be with the next victim when she went out.

On one terrifying occasion, while she was driving, he grabbed her face and the steering wheel, causing the vehicle to smack into a wall.

MacLean then warned the woman to “lie” to police about the collision.

He was described as threatening to “punch her teeth down her throat” so she took the blame.

Another woman was the target of his violent temper.

MacLean raped the final victim. He was later arrested in December 2024.

The crimes mainly occurred in Ayr and the surrounding area.

Michael Anderson KC, defending, told the court: “His position (remains) one of innocence to the allegations.”

Sentencing, Judge John McCormick said MacLean’s previous criminal record “done him no favours”.

This included convictions for violence and breach of the peace.

MacLean will be monitored for three years on his release.

The judge further put him on the sex offenders list and banned him from going near any of the victims – both for indefinite period.
