A man who left his pregnant partner with a stomach bruise after subjecting her to an attack has been jailed for 15 years.
Alan Wharton tortured the woman at her home in Glasgow’s Riddrie between September 2022 and September 2025.
The 37-year-old’s campaign of violence included repeatedly striking her on the head and body, as well as choking her.
Wharton left her with a string of injuries, including a bruise to her stomach, which took place while she was pregnant.
He pleaded guilty to engaging in a course of domestic abuse.
As well as a custodial sentence, sheriff Joan Kerr imposed a three-year non-harassment order that prohibited him from contacting the victim.
The court previously heard that Wharton and the woman began their relationship in September 2022, and he quickly moved in with her.
The woman claimed that he was a cocaine addict who became violent due to it on a weekly basis.
Wharton became jealous, which made the woman feel withdrawn, leading her to spend less time with friends and family.
The woman fell pregnant in November 2023.
In July 2024, however, the pair went to Greece on holiday, and an argument took place.
Prosecutor Danielle McGuinness said: “Wharton choked her out on the balcony.
“On another holiday, while on the plane, Wharton bit her on the arm.”
On another occasion at her mother’s home, Wharton struck the woman on the head, which caused a large wound and left a scar.
The woman’s friend spoke to the woman about not seeing her as often.
She told her friend that Wharton had been physically violent to her and did not want people to see her injuries.
The woman sent her friend pictures of her injuries, which included a swollen face and lip, a burst nose, black eyes, and grazes to her elbows.
Ms McGuinness added: “There was also a swollen black eye, bruises to her neck, a wound to her forehead and a bite mark to her arm.
“There was also a bruise on her pregnant stomach.”
At a wedding, which was attended by the woman, her friend and Wharton, the friend confronted Wharton, but he denied wrongdoing.
On a later occasion, Wharton grabbed the woman’s face and applied pressure to it, causing swelling.
The woman wanted to end the relationship and went to a police station.
However, she was tailed by Wharton in his car, who swerved and attempted to overtake her.
Wharton approached the vehicle with a can and a car seat, which he left on the road.
That same day, the woman’s friend reported welfare concerns and told officers about Wharton’s violence.
The woman was reported safe at her mother’s home.
She did not want to provide a statement to the police but just wanted Wharton away from her own home.
An initial trace for Wharton was unsuccessful, and it was believed he had travelled back to Newcastle.
On October 13, 2025, police arrested Wharton at BAE in Glasgow’s Govan.
Wharton claimed that the woman was a “drunk” and came about her injuries due to her intoxication.
Wharton walked free from another court last year for breaking a man’s facial bones with a single punch at a social club in his native Newcastle.
Wharton, who was on a suspended sentence for battery at the time, was ordered to pay his victim £5,000 in compensation.
